Polymarket vs Kalshi

These are the two heavyweights of prediction markets — but they're built for different people. Kalshi is a US-regulated, dollar-funded exchange; Polymarket is the world's biggest market, running on crypto. Here's how they actually differ, and which one fits you.

The short answer

If you want the most legitimate, lowest-friction option in the US and you'd rather use dollars than crypto, Kalshi is the pick. If you want the deepest range of markets — especially politics, crypto and world events — and you're comfortable with a crypto wallet, Polymarket wins on selection and liquidity.

Regulation

Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated Designated Contract Market — federally regulated, with segregated customer funds. Polymarket left the US in 2022 and returned legally in late 2025 through its acquisition of the CFTC-licensed QCEX exchange. Both now operate under CFTC oversight, but Kalshi has the longer US-regulated track record.

Funding & fees

Kalshi funds in US dollars (bank, card, ACH, wire) with a variable trading fee that peaks near 50¢ pricing and falls to zero at the extremes. Polymarket settles in USDC on Polygon, so you need a crypto wallet; its taker fees are among the lowest in the space and some world-events markets are fee-free. For a pure-fiat user, Kalshi is simpler; for a crypto-native trader, Polymarket is cheaper and deeper.

Markets

Polymarket has the widest catalogue and the deepest liquidity globally — it's the first stop for politics, crypto and geopolitics. Kalshi is strongest in sports and US-centric events and, as a regulated exchange, is more conservative about which markets it lists.

US legality

Both are caught in the same fast-moving, state-by-state legal fight, mostly over sports contracts. Availability differs by state and changes regularly — check our legality tracker for where you live before signing up to either.

Verdict

For most US readers we rank Kalshi first, on the strength of its regulation and dollar funding. But Polymarket is the better choice for depth, variety and crypto-native trading. Many serious traders use both.
